What Makes This DIY Advanced Robotics Kit Special?

Most robotics kits available in India are either too basic — simple line followers or obstacle avoiders — or too expensive for everyday students and hobbyists. The Virtual Pathshala DIY Advanced Robotics Kit occupies a unique position: it gives you genuinely advanced robotics technology — mecanum wheel omnidirectional drive, dual motor driver control, and ESP32 wireless communication — in a single, affordable, ready-to-assemble package. Every component has been hand-selected for quality and compatibility, and the entire kit arrives in a custom 3D printed branded carry case that protects your components and makes this kit feel as premium as it performs.

What Is a Mecanum Wheel Robot and Why Is It Advanced?

A standard wheeled robot can only move forwards, backwards, and turn — it cannot slide sideways or move diagonally without first rotating. A mecanum wheel robot — the type you build with this DIY Advanced Robotics Kit — is an omnidirectional robot that can move in any direction independently of its orientation. The secret is the mecanum wheel: each wheel has a series of small barrel-shaped rollers mounted at 45 degrees around its rim. By independently controlling the speed and direction of each of the four mecanum wheels, the robot can move forward, backward, left, right, diagonally, and rotate on the spot — all without changing its facing direction. This type of movement is used in warehouse robots, surgical robots, underwater drones, and advanced competition robotics — and now you can build one yourself.

Everything Included in the DIY Advanced Robotics Kit

1. Custom 3D Printed Virtual Pathshala Carry Case

Every DIY Advanced Robotics Kit arrives in a custom-designed, 3D printed carry case — designed and manufactured in-house at Virtual Pathshala using our own 3D printers. The box features a secure clip-lock lid in Virtual Pathshala blue with the brand motto “Learn. Build. Innovate.” embossed on the top. The grey base compartment holds all components safely in place during transport and storage. This is not a generic cardboard box — it is a reusable, durable, component-organising carry case that you will use long after your robot is built.

2. 4× 80mm Mecanum Wheels – Omnidirectional Movement

The kit includes four 80mm diameter mecanum wheels — two left-handed and two right-handed — which together form the complete set required for omnidirectional drive. The 80mm diameter provides an excellent balance between ground clearance, traction, and speed for a desktop-scale robot. The rollers are made from durable rubber-coated plastic that provides reliable grip on smooth floors, desks, and most indoor surfaces. Correct placement of left and right wheels is critical for proper omnidirectional movement — the kit documentation covers this clearly.

3. 4× BO Motors – Direct Drive for Each Wheel

Four yellow gear-reduction BO motors are included — one for each mecanum wheel. BO motors (Battery Operated motors) are compact, lightweight DC gear motors widely used in Indian robotics kits for their excellent torque-to-size ratio and easy integration with motor driver boards. Each motor provides sufficient torque to drive an 80mm mecanum wheel reliably on flat surfaces, and their standard mounting dimensions make them straightforward to attach to custom 3D printed or laser-cut chassis frames.

4. 1× ESP32 Development Board – Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Control

The brain of your robot is the ESP32 — Espressif’s powerful dual-core 240MHz microcontroller with built-in 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Classic / BLE. With the ESP32, you can control your mecanum wheel robot wirelessly from a smartphone app, a web browser dashboard running on the robot’s own Wi-Fi access point, a Bluetooth gamepad, or any custom-coded controller. The ESP32 also supports over-the-air (OTA) firmware updates, real-time sensor integration, and communication with cloud platforms — giving your robot significant room to grow beyond basic wireless control into advanced autonomous functions as your skills develop.

5. 2× L298N Motor Driver Modules – Full 4-Motor Independent Control

Two L298N dual H-bridge motor driver modules are included in the DIY Advanced Robotics Kit. Each L298N can independently control two DC motors in forward and reverse directions with full PWM speed control — so two L298N modules together give you independent control over all four BO motors simultaneously. Independent control of each wheel’s speed and direction is the fundamental requirement for mecanum wheel omnidirectional movement — without precise per-wheel control, the robot cannot execute lateral and diagonal movements correctly. The L298N modules accept 5–35V motor supply voltage, making them fully compatible with the 3-cell 18650 lithium-ion battery pack included in this kit.

6. 1× 3-Cell 18650 Battery Holder

A 3-cell series 18650 battery holder is included, which holds three 18650 Li-ion cells in series to produce a nominal output voltage of approximately 11.1V (fully charged: ~12.6V). This voltage is ideal for driving the L298N motor drivers directly while using the onboard 5V regulator of the L298N to power the ESP32. The 3S configuration provides sufficient voltage headroom to maintain consistent motor performance as the battery discharges, ensuring your robot maintains reliable speed and torque throughout a full testing or competition session.

7. 3× 2600mAh 18650 Li-Ion Cells – Included and Ready to Use

Three 2600mAh 18650 lithium-ion cells are included in the kit — pre-tested and ready to install in the battery holder. At a combined capacity of 2600mAh at 11.1V nominal, the pack provides approximately 28.9Wh of energy — enough to run the robot continuously for 30–60 minutes depending on motor load and driving style. The 18650 cells are rechargeable using any standard 18650 charger or 3S Li-ion balance charger (not included), and can be individually replaced when they reach end of life — making this a far more cost-effective long-term power solution than disposable batteries.

8. 1× Toggle Switch – Master Power Control

A robust SPST toggle switch is included for master power control of the robot. Wiring the toggle switch between the battery holder output and the motor driver input gives your robot a clean, reliable on/off switch — critical for competition use and safe handling when the robot is not actively in use. The toggle switch body is suitable for panel mounting on a 3D printed or laser-cut chassis.

9. Jumper Wires – Complete Wiring Included

A set of jumper wires is included to connect all components together without soldering — making this kit accessible even for beginners who have not yet learned soldering. The included wires are sufficient for all the connections required in the standard build configuration: ESP32 to L298N signal lines, battery holder to L298N power input, motor terminals to L298N output channels, and toggle switch wiring.
